Screw in place from outside on each side.
Next, fix back rail in place, using glue and
screwing from back of seat into rails.
STEP 8
Cut armrests to size, with a 45°
mitre at back, so they overhang at both
front and back by about 20mm. Cut
capping to size, with a mitre at each
end. Glue and screw 1 armrest to side
rail so it's flush with inside edge of rails.
STEP 9
Glue and screw capping for
backrest. Repeat with other armrest. Fill
screw holes with a wood filler or fast-
drying 2-part filler. When set, scrape
surface smooth with a sharp chisel. Sand.
STEP 10
To prepare door and panels for
screen, remove any blocks or cleats
using a chisel, and remove any nails or
screws. Sand panels smooth to remove
evidence of glue joints.
STEP 11
Securely fix centre panel of
door, which supports mirror, with extra
nails. Finish with a nail punch.
STEP 12
Screw panels and mirrored
door together with piano hinges,
predrilling screw holes as you go.
STEP 13
Sand seat and screen all over
to prepare them for painting, then apply
2 coats of acrylic paint.
STEP 14
When thoroughly dry, use
worn medium or fine sandpaper to
gently rub over surfaces of seat and
screen to expose a little of the timber
underneath. Don't overdo it, and
concentrate on spots that you would
come into contact with in everyday use
for an authentic worn look.
STEP 1 5
If your panels are suitable,
have small mirrors cut to size, with
sharps edges removed, and use mirror
adhesive to glue them in place.
STEP 16
To seal and protect painted
surfaces, rub in some cabinet maker's
wax using 0000 steel wool, then buff
with a soft cloth.
STEP 17
Fit handles to drawer and
centre screen panel that are in character
with the overall look you want to achieve.
Add a few cushions to your chair, sit
back, and admire your work.
